Can you fly with e-bike batteries?


When we want to transport E-bikes we have doubts whether it is possible to fly with e-bike batteries? When we try for an answer, most people say “no.” The possible modes of transportation are planes, trains, and automobiles that come at the top. Travelers and E-bikers travel to distant places for visits and sight scenes across countries and continents. The old cycles are replaced with new E-bikes and it is now one of the fastest-growing categories in the bicycle industry in the world. It is one of the best choices for travellers looking for a convenient way to see the sights while on the road.

When you travel abroad your eBike needs a new battery. Or, you're moving to a new part of the country. You want to transport your battery ahead so that you don't have to worry about taking care of it in transit. You can simply ship your bike and battery for a long vacation or to your next set of bike trails.

Is it allowed to take E-bike Batteries on Plane?

 Batteries with a watt-hour (Wh) capacity of 100-160 Wh were allowed on board with prior air carrier approval. But changes have happened recently that airlines can choose whether to allow it or not. A good majority of electric bike batteries, are larger, ranging from 300Wh to 600Wh+, and not allowed on a plane by the authorities. But you will need to get permission to load in advance. However, when it comes to flying with an E-bike, without batteries you have some more options.

FAA Regulations:

The FAA in the United States allows passengers to bring Li-ion batteries with a capacity of fewer than 100 watt-hours (Wh). Both carry-on and checked bags are subject to this restriction. While you can't fly on an e-bike, you can fly with one.

The lithium batteries, which can power all types of devices now in use, if damaged can catch fire or if the battery terminals are short-circuited,” explains the U.S. (FAA) Federal Aviation Administration in an official statement dated March 2019 in the lithium battery fact sheet.

Hazardous Materials:

The following items come under hazardous materials while on a plane,

Batteries for mobility scooters.

Baseball bats, nun chucks, and knuckle dusters are all examples of weapons.

Blowtorches, nail guns, bolt guns, and power saws are some tools used.

Harpoons, machetes, and spears, as well as swords, sword-sticks, and sabers.

Shotguns with a maximum length of 24 inches are prohibited.

Set of Rules:

The FAA, TSA, and the airline you're flying with all have their own set of rules.

Each has its own set of rules. The FAA provides the most comprehensive set of rules available, which we can access and print out to take with us. You can only bring two "extra" lithium rechargeable batteries with a capacity of 100 Wh Watt-hours or less, according to the rules.

The FAA only accepts batteries with a capacity of 160 watts- ours, as shown on the form above. You can't fly with the enhanced XR batteries because they're 199Wh (the one-wheel XR battery is 267Wh, so you can't fly with it either). Most batteries are standard ones boosted from (99wh), one wheel plus (130hw), and one wheel pint (146wh) are suitable.

Lithium metal batteries, Spare lithium-ion, power banks, and cell phone battery charging cases, must be transported solely in carry-on luggage.

General Restrictions:







Batteries are permitted:

Dry cell alkaline batteries (standard AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, button-sized cells, etc.) are allowed in carry-on baggage.

Lithium-ion batteries for consumer use (up to 100-watt hours per battery)

Consumer-sized batteries (with up to 2 grams of lithium per battery) are allowed to be transported.

Is it possible to send an e-bike battery?

The difficulty is that transporting your bike, or even just the battery, is a complicated procedure because shipping batteries is subject to stricter restrictions than shipping other types of merchandise. Don't get caught up in the tangle of restrictions that govern how to send a battery across the country.

Problems with batteries include

The cost of batteries is the most significant cost that the owner should incur in the transaction. The finite lifespan of the sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid batteries need to be changed if they are found damaged or no longer provide the user's requirements. The batteries, which last for two years, are uncommon, and are usual to be around one year. A lead-acid battery for an electric scooter cost between $ 175 and $ 256, depending on the rating, manufacturer, quality, and warranty. Lithium-ion batteries are available for electric scooters; however, they are significantly more expensive than lead-acid batteries.

Rent an e-bike battery:

You can surely rent a battery on arrival to places you need. Passing passengers and travellers can seek eBike batteries to holidaymakers in Europe, but so far it doesn’t be an issue. If you are traveling, the best option is to look for local bike shops at your vacation destination that hire eBikes. You can contact them well in advance and check if you can rent a battery that will fit your bike. The average daily rent comes between 7 and 10 euros and the minimum requirements should be for six days.

Possible Dangers Ebike batteries:

The use of batteries, time, overcharging, brand, etc have a great effect on the life of the batteries and its aftereffects that lead to damage to the lithium-ion battery and subsequently pose a threat to users and responders who are involved in vehicle recovery and salvage operations. The collision or crash of batteries can cause explosions and fire. Dropping the batteries from 20 m can also have the same effect. These batteries produce a very high amount of heat and energy and it may be very crucial for responders. The chemical contents of this type of battery will cause catch fire if it is previously damaged improperly designed or assembled or hit at high speed.

The after-effects of these are hard to extinguish, which leads to huge damage to property and life. This is the major reason why e-bike batteries are not allowed in planes.

Transportation of e-bike batteries:

The Shippers must document and confirm the transportation of these batteries to the applicable regulations published by PHMSA and IATA. In conditions prevailing, the batteries made of lithium are transported just under the reduced regulations only when the batteries are packed with or contained in equipment. Without the equipment numbers (UN3090, UN3480,) air transportation of these lithium-ion or metal batteries needs to be fully regulated and transported as dangerous goods, which requires a Dangerous Goods contract. This contract of Dangerous Goods contract is applicable if it does not comply with small lithium batteries packed with or contained in equipment for which the transporter

Last note:

If you want to bypass airport security with a few smaller batteries, you must make a bigger battery once you land at your destination. The 100Wh battery capacity has a restriction for air travel. You can opt for Ligo batter, which is made in Canada. We designed a battery set that comes under this limit (2.7Ah x 36V = 98Wh) to be exact. The LiGo battery module can be re-assembled into a larger battery with a usable capacity of an e-bike battery once you landed at your destination.
